Garfield Park Neighborhood Market

Despite the challenges of the past season, the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market hosted four Saturday markets and one seniors-only market from July through October. Each market date featured local vendors and fresh produce and value-added products through the Garfield Park Garden Network. In total, the market sold 958 pounds of locally-grown produce with customers. All markets followed city-wide COVID-19 health and safety guidelines.

The Garfield Park Neighborhood Market is one of the most unique farmers markets in the City of Chicago, selling hyper-local produce grown in community gardens in the Garfield Park Garden Network and products made by West Side Entrepreneurs and members of The Hatchery Chicago. Summer markets are held on the second Saturday and the following Thursday of each month from June - October on the plaza of The Hatchery! In the Winter and Spring, markets will be held indoors in The Hatchery event space.

At the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market, we not only value racial equity and justice, we also put it into practice. In a December 2019 survey, we found that 12% of our vendors identify as Latinx and 56% as Black or of African descent. Additionally, 33% of our vendors are businesses are owned by women!

The Garfield Park Neighborhood Market originated in 2012 as part of a public space activation project on the vacant lot that now houses The Hatchery. In early 2019, the Garfield Park Neighborhood Market began hosting indoor pop-up markets at The Hatchery facility. Indoor market dates feature value-added products, such as pickled okra and cabbage relish, sourced from the Garfield Park Garden Network. Proceeds from produce sales benefit the continued development of local community gardens. Additional local businesses sell diverse items including baked goods and healthy, hypo-allergenic bath and body products. Members of The Hatchery Chicago present new food products like traditional African snacks, barbeque sauces, soups, and herb-infused salts.
