Green Tie Event: New Community Greenhouse in West Garfield Park

The Council’s partnership with the Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance helped to secure a grant to build a new 24’ x 30’ community greenhouse at a large community garden site in the West Garfield Park area. Work crews from the Safer Foundation and Greencorps Chicago installed the 720 square foot greenhouse in spring 2011. We anticipate that this greenhouse will enable community gardeners to grow 5,000 seedlings each season for transplanting in local community gardens at a cost savings of a $10,000 in seedling costs per season. The Councilwill support the local gardeners using the greenhouse by equipping it with work benches, raised bed constructions, soil, mulch, compost and tools that are needed to ensure operations are at full capacity. The greenhouse will be an active growing center year-around and will be available to garden groups involved in the Open Space Committee.
